Deception and Disobedience: Satan Suggests What Your Heart Wants [Genesis 1.6]

Have you ever committed a sin?  Yep, we all have.  Have you ever committed a sin that ruined life for all of humanity?  Yikes, probably not. 
We see a very familiar pattern with Adam and Eve in Genesis 3.  It is the “see, want, take” model of selfishness that has gotten countless people in trouble.  In fact, one of the shrewdest ways Satan is able to trick Adam and Eve is by telling them that taking the fruit will make them like God. The problem?  They already were like God…they were made in His image, after all.  But there lies the struggle for us too.  We want to define right and wrong, good and bad.  We want to be the central focus of the universe and make everything about us.  Deep down, pride and selfishness are at the root of the world’s problems.

Rest, Worship, and Relationship: All is right with the world [Genesis 1.5]

It’s interesting to think about the setting and mood in the Garden of Eden.  Do you imagine a pretty calm vibe?  Is it warm there? (Probably, they didn’t have any clothes!) Is God just always there with them?  What did Adam do before Eve was created? What did Adam and Eve do together?  There are a lot of unknowns, but something we see for sure is that it was a restful place where they could be with God and each other without anything (like sin) getting in the way.  That alone is something to ponder and pray about. 
 What would life look like for you if you treated rest, worship, and relationships as priorities and made regular time for them? Listen to consider God’s original intention for humans.

The Importance of Being Made in the Image of God

Made in His Image: Dignity from the Womb to the Grave [Genesis 1.4]

“Made in His Image.”  Now, there’s a phrase that can change everything.  I want you to consider for just a minute what is happening in our country.  Have you watched the news?  Been on social media?  Dared to venture into the comments section of…anything?  What we have in our culture today is a complete lack of appreciation for the fact that we are ALL created in the image of God.  If you want to get fancy, the “Image of God” in Latin is referred to as the Imago Dei. This means that humans (all of them) have inherent dignity and worth (even people you don’t like or agree with), and that every person is created with a unique purpose and destiny (including people who hate and attack you). The big idea of Imago Dei? It emphasizes the value of human life and the responsibility of humans to reflect God's character in the world. On Purpose: God Brings Life Into the Universe [Genesis 1.3]

“God said…” followed by, “and it was so.” That is the pattern you find in the creation account. There is a lot of controversy about the days of creation because of these passages. A lot of interesting and difficult questions arise: How long did it actually take? (24 hrs? Years? Millions of Years? Billions of years?) Did God create everything with the appearance of age, or was everything young and grew quickly? Did God use theistic evolution? Is the creation account a literal story or a moral one? (and on and on it goes) However, I want you to notice that phrase again: “God said…” followed by, “and it was so.”
What we see there in that phrase reveals several things about God: He’s powerful enough to create; he wanted to create; and he did create…on purpose. Rather than trying to figure out the details of the creation account, it might be better to settle into what God is saying about himself in the creation account.
Also, how does it impact the rest of the Bible? Does it have meaning and purpose for you or humankind, in general? Listen to continue to explore one of the most famous accounts of all time: creation in Genesis.

Let There Be Light: Finding Hope and Purpose in Darkness [Genesis Part 1.2]

“Let there be light.” How many times have you heard someone quote that…or something like it? Dinner is served? “Let there be food!” Vacation started? “Let there be fun!” The idea that God created everything we see by the power of his words is hard to comprehend. But what do you think the opening verses of Scripture say about God? Is he just showing off? Is it science? Is it philosophy? Is it even real? These are pretty important questions that ultimately find their answer in a God who is real and who desires something pretty important: you. Knowing there is a God powerful enough to speak the universe into existence is one thing, but to know that He also wants relationship with you and gives you value and purpose and meaning is another thing altogether. Listen to explore how “Let there be light” can bring hope and purpose to a world that very much needs it.
