Is Christmas giving bad?

Why does charitable giving spike in December? People give so much this time of year, yet food banks are in serious need during the summer.  Why does it seem many are so generous and compassionate during Christmas, but not the rest of the year? Is it joy or guilt? If we follow Jesus all the time, shouldn’t we be generous all the time? Think about it…Jesus expects us to be generous because he’s generous.  Let’s work on reflecting him not out of guilt or duty, but as a reflection of who he is. Remember, Christmas is a time to remember that self-giving love and holiness in their truest form entered the world. Jesus is coming.

Can gifts distract you from the real gift?

Seriously, consider how much time we think about the details of Christmas compared to how much we think about the meaning of Christmas. The newest gadgets, toys, and tech.  The must-have clothes, the newest trend, two, or even one-day shipping right to your door…in a world of convenience, this is a season of complication! Think about this: What is that one thing you are searching for? What does your heart say will make it happy? A lot of our hearts' desires lead to spending money we don’t have and piling up things we don’t need.  Is that what you really want? God has given us a kingdom, but as is the case with most gifts, we get used to them, don’t we? We’ve been given the opportunity of a new world through a baby born in little more than a cave. Jesus is coming.

Is Christmas an Idol that’s destroying Christmas?

Christmas cards, photos, and social media posts are great examples of good things that can be warped into something that misrepresents our lives to chase perfection. They look so perfect, beautiful, and put together.  So, what’s the problem?  We’re not all so perfect, beautiful, and put together, are we? Usually, we’re messy, unplanned, and imperfect.  The cool thing is that Jesus came into our messy, unplanned, imperfect world as one of us! Regardless of how polished our cards, pictures, or posts are, we all fall short. But there is still hope! Even this year, even with all the problems, all the division, all the struggles, even after all this time – Jesus is coming.

What is an Elder? [We Smell Like Sheep Part 4]

You don’t hear much talk about “Elders” in a church, do you? What comes to mind when you hear that? Is it something official, or does it just refer to the elder…ly people in a church? Since a lot of churches don’t talk about Elders, or perhaps don’t even have Elders in their church, it can be a confusing topic. However, this role within a church is a vital one and in this video we’ll look at Elders and what they do to help accomplish the mission Jesus gave His Church.

Being a deacon in a church is a somewhat confusing idea for a lot of people. Different churches have different roles for their deacons, and this doesn’t help most people grasp what the purpose of a deacon is, or who should serve as one.  This might seem like a dry topic, but serving as a deacon is a foundationally important (and misunderstood) role within a local church.  Tune in to learn some things that might change how you think!

What is Church? What does it mean to belong? [We Smell Like Sheep Part 1]

There is a lot of confusion about what a church is and what it should look like. For a lot of people, it’s just a place to go to…a building. For some, it’s deeply personal and carries a lot of significant meaning for them and holds a special place in their lives. And for other people? It’s who they are and what they are a part of. Stay Focused if You Really Want Resilience [Resilient Part 6]

With so many distractions out there, how can we develop what John Eldridge calls “single-heartedness” in our lives?  He argues it’s this single-heartedness that allows us to have the strength to make difficult choices that will ultimately bring us into alignment with our Savior, Jesus. Think about it for a minute: how can we hope to stay focused and thrive in this life…if we don’t stay focused on the only one worthy of our focus.  Jesus isn’t just a good guy or a sage leader.  He’s the creator of the universe and savior of the world.  Here’s basically what he said in Luke 17:32, “Don’t look back! You can’t have any divided loyalties if you’re going to make it!” What he really said is, “don’t forget Lot’s wife.”  Now, why would he say that?  Listen to find out!

Go Deeper with God [Resilient Part 5]

Have you ever thought about having different “levels” to your being?  That’s a pretty out there thought, isn’t it?  Well, maybe not.  It’s actually how the Bible refers to us.  Take, for example, Hebrews 4:12 which says, “For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  That’s pretty deep.  That says that you definitely have layers.  If so, how can we build resilience by seeking God in all those places?  And…how do we go to that deep well inside of our souls to really tap into that “strength that endures” like we’re promised? In John 7:38, Jesus puts it this way, “The one who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, will have streams of living water flow from deep within him.” Did you see that? Streams of living water flowing from “deep within.” That’s how we tap into a resilient strength that prevails.  We must have a real plan for resilience and it’s not going to be found in a screen, hobby, or sin.  We must put all our hope and focus on Jesus and dare to go into those deeper places within our souls.  Listen to see how God says to do what might seem impossible!
