Receiving and Giving Forgiveness [I am Barabbas Part 2]

Forgiveness is something a lot of people don’t understand.  In fact, when people say, “I’m sorry,” most of the time the response is, “Oh, don’t worry about it…it’s ok.”  That’s a little sneak-peak into what we believe about forgiveness and believe it or not, it can dampen our appreciation of Jesus’ forgiveness for us.  Like Barabbas, we also walk out of prison and into freedom when we accept Him as Savior.  If we can’t deeply appreciate what we’ve been given, it makes it easy not to extend forgiveness to others.

Understanding Grace and Mercy [I am Barabbas Part 1]

To fully understand the scope of what Jesus offers us and what Easter is really all about, you need to have a good grasp on grace and mercy.  We don’t use these words very much on a day-to-day basis, so let’s explore them to help us understand the power of what Jesus did on our behalf.  Remember, this month we’re discovering the Easter story through the eyes of Barabbas; a man who was extended both grace and mercy.

The Consequences of Impatience [Genesis 3.6]

Earlier in this series, I mentioned that making choices out of fear is usually not a good idea.  For this week, I’d like you to consider what happens when you make choices out of impatience.   That’s what we see happen with Abram and Sarai.  God made them a very specific promise, they just weren’t willing to wait for Him to fulfill it.  They took matters into their own hands, and the consequences are still being felt today in 2024!  Have you ever made a blunder like that?  However, in the midst of all of this, we still see God’s goodness and protection…over the ones impacted by Abram and Sarai’s impatience: Hagar and Ishmael.

The Promise that Changed Everything [Genesis 3.5]

What does it look like to believe the unbelievable?  Most of the time it looks a lot like crazy.  However, Abram sets the bar for believing that would be held up as the standard for the rest of the Bible.  Think about that.  His faith was so profound (and crazy) that the rest of the Bible writers use him (repeatedly) as an example for us to follow.  The promise God makes to Abram in Genesis 15 is also foundational for all that would unfold in both the Old and New Testaments.  Needless to say, this is a pretty important chapter of Scripture!

Heroic Rescues and Mysterious Kings [Genesis 3.4]

Genesis 14 has excitement and mystery.  First, Abram and a small army pursue an epic and heroic rescue of Lot.  Then, we’re introduced to a mysterious character: Melchizedek, king of Salem.  He seems to come out of nowhere, but he’s obviously recognized by Abram as being superior to himself.  Further, Melchizedek keeps appearing prophetically in the Psalms and especially in the book of Hebrews in the New Testament.

Crossroads: Your Choices Matter [Genesis 3.3]

When you have a chance to bless someone at the cost of your own personal gain…how easy is it to make the “right” decision?  That’s the selfless choice Abram makes to bless his nephew, Lot.  In this passage in Genesis, we see Abram at one of his finer moments.  He demonstrates a pursuit of peace, shows generosity, and gives a clear example of trust that God will guide and provide, even when faced with choices that may seem less advantageous.  The question we ask ourselves is whether we can rely on God’s promises rather than solely pursuing worldly wealth and comfort.

When Faith and Fear Collide [Genesis 3.2]

Have you ever had a crisis of faith?  What did that look like? Really, take a few seconds to think about a specific moment.  It can be scary when our faith collides into our fears.  Which one wins?  What does fear make us do?  What does it make YOU do?  It usually isn’t good to react out of fear, but we do it sometimes, don’t we?  In Genesis, we see Abram, who is considered a biblical hero, falter and make a pretty serious mistake because his fear was bigger than the God he trusted.

Genesis Recap [Genesis 3.1]

We’re jumping back into Genesis after taking a break for a couple months.  Now, Genesis is one of the most fascinating pieces of literature ever written and inside of it are people, places, and ideas that have shaped human history for thousands of years!  So, to help us all catch up and get on the same page, we’re going to take a flyover journey through what we’ve already covered in Genesis 1-12.  We’ll explore some of the major themes that are in those early chapters of Genesis, as well as how those themes are foundational to understanding the rest of the Bible.  Like we’ve said all along, if you understand Genesis, you’ll better understand the Bible (and God).

Delete the Unnecessary

Look at your life right now and ask yourself this:  If you had to delete something to bring your heart some peace and give you space to focus on God and growing in holiness…what would you delete?  Is it something sucking up all your time? Would it be a relationship?  Or maybe some unhealthy habits you’ve built?  It’s a good exercise to think about the things in your life that are causing stress, anxiety and distance from God and the people that matter most to you.  What if you made the bold move to make real change in those areas?
