Googling God: How can I know why we suffer?

The existence of suffering in the world has been a tremendous challenge to the idea of God for many years. It seems that if suffering exists, then we have a God who doesn’t care about suffering, actually desires people to suffer, or is unable to prevent suffering. Can suffering be somehow reconciled with the idea of God?  Can we find meaning or purpose in suffering, or is that only possible without suffering?  Does living in America impact how we answer this question? Listen to wrestle with the idea of how suffering and a loving God can and should co-exist.

Googling God: How can I know which is the real God?

Last Sunday we talked about how we can know God is real. This Sunday, we’re going to try and narrow that down a bit by asking, “How can I know which is the real God?” This isn’t a new question by any means. Humans have been asking this one for almost as long as humans have existed! Today, you’ve got Hindus, Muslims, Jews, tribal religions, ancestor worship, self-worship, the Energy of the universe, and, of course, Christianity. How do we know which is right??? Is it merely determined by where you’re born? Aren’t they all the same? Tune in to wrestle with some great ideas about God.

Googling God: How can I know that God is Real?

About half the developed world remembers life before the internet and access to endless information in seconds. Today, ChatGPT and other AI software (Siri, Alexa, Google, etc) have completely changed the game in how we access information. The internet is great, but it’s also an endless flood of information and more and more people are heading there to find answers to life’s biggest questions, only to be drowned in the immediate and endless options provided. Because of this, most of us feel completely overwhelmed by the onslaught of information we have available…study after study shows how depressed and anxious it’s making us! As time goes on, we’re seeing people google more questions related to meaning. But are they finding it? What do we see out there? Have we found meaning with so many options? This confusion is why some people are deconstructing their faith…there’s just too much out there to know anything for sure! Listen as we start with a big question: how can I know that God is real?

Deception and Disobedience: Satan Suggests What Your Heart Wants [Genesis 1.6]

Have you ever committed a sin?  Yep, we all have.  Have you ever committed a sin that ruined life for all of humanity?  Yikes, probably not. 
We see a very familiar pattern with Adam and Eve in Genesis 3.  It is the “see, want, take” model of selfishness that has gotten countless people in trouble.  In fact, one of the shrewdest ways Satan is able to trick Adam and Eve is by telling them that taking the fruit will make them like God. The problem?  They already were like God…they were made in His image, after all.  But there lies the struggle for us too.  We want to define right and wrong, good and bad.  We want to be the central focus of the universe and make everything about us.  Deep down, pride and selfishness are at the root of the world’s problems.

Rest, Worship, and Relationship: All is right with the world [Genesis 1.5]

It’s interesting to think about the setting and mood in the Garden of Eden.  Do you imagine a pretty calm vibe?  Is it warm there? (Probably, they didn’t have any clothes!) Is God just always there with them?  What did Adam do before Eve was created? What did Adam and Eve do together?  There are a lot of unknowns, but something we see for sure is that it was a restful place where they could be with God and each other without anything (like sin) getting in the way.  That alone is something to ponder and pray about. 
 What would life look like for you if you treated rest, worship, and relationships as priorities and made regular time for them? Listen to consider God’s original intention for humans.

Made in His Image: Dignity from the Womb to the Grave [Genesis 1.4]

“Made in His Image.”  Now, there’s a phrase that can change everything.  I want you to consider for just a minute what is happening in our country.  Have you watched the news?  Been on social media?  Dared to venture into the comments section of…anything?  What we have in our culture today is a complete lack of appreciation for the fact that we are ALL created in the image of God.  If you want to get fancy, the “Image of God” in Latin is referred to as the Imago Dei. This means that humans (all of them) have inherent dignity and worth (even people you don’t like or agree with), and that every person is created with a unique purpose and destiny (including people who hate and attack you). The big idea of Imago Dei? It emphasizes the value of human life and the responsibility of humans to reflect God's character in the world.
