Shavuot - Pentecost or Feast of Weeks
This feast was celebrated 50 days, or seven weeks, after the Day of First Fruits and marked the completion of the grain harvest. Jewish tradition associates the holiday with the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. This feast may be one of the holy days that is least understood because of its connection to the descending of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles in Acts 2, marking the birth of the Church. Listen for our last message in our “Feasts, Fasts and Faith” series for a deeper understanding of Pentecost and what it means for us today

Yom HaBikkurim (Day of Firstfruits)
This feast was celebrated on the Sunday after Passover and symbolized the firstfruits of the harvest, which were to be dedicated to God. It was a very tangible reminder of the goodness and provision of God. Christians believe that Jesus' resurrection on the third day after his death fulfilled the feast of Firstfruits, as he became the firstfruits of those who will rise from the dead. Also, it’s a great reminder that we should offer ourselves as firstfruits to God. Listen to explore how this holy day can help us better understand that we should always be willing to turn our best over to God and trust him with what’s next!

Easter, or Resurrection Sunday, is the foundation on which Christianity stands. It is the oldest Christian holiday and the most important day of the church year because of the significance of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the events upon which Christianity is based. The apostle Paul says that without the resurrection, there is no basis for belief in Christ, and the whole belief system crumbles. Notice the contrasts he draws out in 1 Corinthians 15:17-20: “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. 18 Those, then, who have fallen asleep in Christ have also perished. 19 If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone. 20 But as it is, Christ has been raised from the dead.” Listen for a celebration of the hope and eternal life that Jesus offers to everyone!

Why is Good Friday referred to as “good”? What the Jewish authorities and Romans did to Jesus was definitely not good (see Matthew chapters 26–27). However, the results of Christ’s death are very good! Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” First Peter 3:18 tells us, “For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit.” Listen to remember what our freedom costs.

Pesach (Passover) and Chag Hamatzot (Feast of Unleavened Bread)
Passover (Pesach) - This feast commemorated the Israelites' deliverance from slavery in Egypt. It is foundational for the Jewish identity and Christians believe that Jesus' death and resurrection fulfilled the Passover feast, as Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice for sin, just as the Passover lamb was a sacrifice for sin in ancient times.
Unleavened Bread (Chag HaMatzot) - This feast was celebrated immediately after Passover and lasted for seven days. During this time, the Israelites were commanded to eat unleavened bread to symbolize their haste in leaving Egypt and the purity they were to maintain. Christians believe that the feast of Unleavened Bread represents the sinless life of Jesus and his perfect sacrifice. Listen to learn about these two important holidays and how they connect to our faith.

Feasts & Faith: Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles)
This feast commemorated the 40 years of wandering in the wilderness by the Israelites. It was also a time of rejoicing and thanksgiving. Christians believe that the feast of Tabernacles foreshadows the future dwelling of God with his people and the establishment of his kingdom on earth. Listen as we discover how this holy day can bring a whole new understanding to what it meant when Jesus showed up!
