Genesis Recap [Genesis 3.1]

We’re jumping back into Genesis after taking a break for a couple months.  Now, Genesis is one of the most fascinating pieces of literature ever written and inside of it are people, places, and ideas that have shaped human history for thousands of years!  So, to help us all catch up and get on the same page, we’re going to take a flyover journey through what we’ve already covered in Genesis 1-12.  We’ll explore some of the major themes that are in those early chapters of Genesis, as well as how those themes are foundational to understanding the rest of the Bible.  Like we’ve said all along, if you understand Genesis, you’ll better understand the Bible (and God).

Delete the Unnecessary

Look at your life right now and ask yourself this:  If you had to delete something to bring your heart some peace and give you space to focus on God and growing in holiness…what would you delete?  Is it something sucking up all your time? Would it be a relationship?  Or maybe some unhealthy habits you’ve built?  It’s a good exercise to think about the things in your life that are causing stress, anxiety and distance from God and the people that matter most to you.  What if you made the bold move to make real change in those areas?

Alter Your Actions

Last week we talked about controlling our mindset.  This week we follow up with the result of a changed mind…changed actions.  However, self-control isn’t really a fun topic to talk about, much less to instill into your life.  Just one more episode, we say.  Just one more cookie, chip, soda, slice of pizza, scoop of ice cream…we say.  That’s the stuff that New Year’s resolutions are all about, right?  But what if we thought differently about “just one more?” How about one more minute of prayer or one more chapter of Scripture?  What about praying for one more fellow believer?  What about one more message or call of encouragement?  What if instead of aimlessly scrolling social media, the news, YouTube, and Amazon, we instead focused on growing and changing into what God is calling us to? If God says we can be new creations because of Him, what do we need to do to continue becoming what He's promised?  (spoiler: it’s not easy, but it’s worth it!)

Control Your Mindset

Isn’t it interesting that the Creator of the universe wants to partner with His children to reach and change the world?  People just like you and me! However, we believe a lot of things about the world that aren’t good or godly.  Not only that, but we also believe certain things about ourselves that aren’t good or godly.  It’s easy to accept things that are crazy or simply lies just because they are repeated enough.  Our culture does that a lot…about a lot of things.  Obviously, not everything in our culture is bad, so we need to evaluate constantly.  The question is, how do we do that?  What has God said that gives insight into discerning what is right and wrong.  He's also spoken quite a bit about how to alter our minds to be more in line with Him, the one who died for us.  If you can focus your mind on Jesus instead of the world, it will bless you, bring peace to you, and restore hope in a way the world can’t compete with!  Want real change in 2024? Start with your mindset!

Christmas Eve Service

We made it. Christmas Eve is here. However, this can be the most amped-up time with last-minute details, dinners, packed houses, frustrating guests and family, travel delays, packages not showing up, and other stress-inducing hiccups. How can we land the Christmas plane in a way that brings joy and peace? How can we let go of those things and find a little peace in our hearts and joy in our souls? Here’s a hint: We genuinely pursue the One that the holiday is about. We’ll celebrate the meaning of Christmas together in a way that blesses people every year!

Don’t Let Perfect Blind you from Beautiful

Tradition is a powerful and wonderful part of Christmas. The food, the music, the decorations and trimmings, and the funny memories. However, if our traditions don’t go just as we would like them to, Christmas can feel…off.  Or, worse, like a letdown.   The true story of Christmas was all wrong for a king.  Think about it: It was pretty gross.  Way too many animals probably made it a messy, stinky scene flooded with uninvited shepherds, while the whole thing was shrouded in scandal and difficulty.  But…this imperfect story is the greatest thing to ever happen to humankind. If we’re only focused on a perfect Christmas, we’ll miss the point that Jesus came to transform us.  Nothing is ever going to give us what our hearts long for except Jesus. That’s the point. Jesus alone transforms, redeems, and brings real joy and life change this Christmas. Jesus is coming.

Is Christmas giving bad?

Why does charitable giving spike in December? People give so much this time of year, yet food banks are in serious need during the summer.  Why does it seem many are so generous and compassionate during Christmas, but not the rest of the year? Is it joy or guilt? If we follow Jesus all the time, shouldn’t we be generous all the time? Think about it…Jesus expects us to be generous because he’s generous.  Let’s work on reflecting him not out of guilt or duty, but as a reflection of who he is. Remember, Christmas is a time to remember that self-giving love and holiness in their truest form entered the world. Jesus is coming.

Can gifts distract you from the real gift?

Seriously, consider how much time we think about the details of Christmas compared to how much we think about the meaning of Christmas. The newest gadgets, toys, and tech.  The must-have clothes, the newest trend, two, or even one-day shipping right to your door…in a world of convenience, this is a season of complication! Think about this: What is that one thing you are searching for? What does your heart say will make it happy? A lot of our hearts' desires lead to spending money we don’t have and piling up things we don’t need.  Is that what you really want? God has given us a kingdom, but as is the case with most gifts, we get used to them, don’t we? We’ve been given the opportunity of a new world through a baby born in little more than a cave. Jesus is coming.

Is Christmas an Idol that’s destroying Christmas?

Christmas cards, photos, and social media posts are great examples of good things that can be warped into something that misrepresents our lives to chase perfection. They look so perfect, beautiful, and put together.  So, what’s the problem?  We’re not all so perfect, beautiful, and put together, are we? Usually, we’re messy, unplanned, and imperfect.  The cool thing is that Jesus came into our messy, unplanned, imperfect world as one of us! Regardless of how polished our cards, pictures, or posts are, we all fall short. But there is still hope! Even this year, even with all the problems, all the division, all the struggles, even after all this time – Jesus is coming.
